The Cold Sore Remedy
July 13th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
I wanted to talk to you about the cold sores remedy that you can do to help fix this problem. Some people are affected differently by their sores. Some people will end up just having a tingling sensation on their lip, while others will experience intense pain. Some will have outbreaks every other week, while others will have it maybe once a year. Everyone is affected differently, but the root cause of this is a virus known as HSV-1 that lives in your body. There is no cure for it, which makes it sound a lot worse than it actually is, but 80% of people have it anyway. I’m going to talk to you about the cold sores remedy.
When you actually get a cold sore on your lip, it is going to go through a few stages and will probably disappear in just under 2 weeks. The first sign of a cold sore will be a tingling sensation on your lip. You won’t actually see anything, but you’ll feel the tingling. Eventually the sore will come out and you’ll have it on your lip. A few days later it will ***** open and start oozing. Finally it will get a scab and eventually disappear.
The cold sores remedy that I want to talk to you about is speeding up the healing time. The problem with cold sores is that is spreads very easily. The cold sore becomes the most contagious when the sore actually breaks open and starts oozing. Keeping your cold sore clean is important for healing fast. The cleaner you keep it, the less likely it will spread.
Oral Herpes: the Cold Hard Facts About Cold Sores
July 13th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
Generally called cold sores, oral or ****** herpes is typically caused by type 1 of the herpes virus (type 2 generally causes ******* herpes). Oral herpes is a very common condition and about 90% of Americans are thought to be infected. Unlike its ******* counterpart, oral herpes is not necessarily contracted through sexual contact. Oftentimes, the virus is contracted at an early age, perhaps by being kissed by an adult who has a cold sore. Sharing eating utensils, razors and towels with a person who has an active oral herpes outbreak can also contract the virus.
Oral herpes is common and incurable, but it is not fatal. Most of the time individuals who have oral herpes have no symptoms at all or the symptoms may be so mild that they are undetected. Even still, a person may confuse oral herpes with a number of other conditions. If symptoms do occur, they may include the following:
* Tiny, fluid-filled blisters or sores located around the mouth, surrounded by red (or inflamed) skin
* Soreness or tingling around the mouth days before blisters appear on skin
* Discomfort and appearance of blisters generally last between 7 and 10 days
While the mouth area is the most common location for cold sores, there have been cases where the outbreaks occur on nostrils, chin or even fingers.
One misconception about cold sores is that they are related to canker sores. The two are very different, however, in nature and in function. Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus and are contagious, while canker sores are not caused by a virus, but rather are noncontagious ulcers that occur inside soft tissue of the mouth, where cold sores rarely occur.
Cold sores can be passed from person to person through skin-to-skin contact. Greatest risk of contracting the virus is during the time the blisters appear until they have completely disappeared. However, it is still possible to spread herpes even after the skin has healed and the infection is no longer visible.
* Do not kiss or have skin contact with infected persons during an outbreak. Herpes is passed most easily when there are moist secretions from cold sores.
* Do not share items like eating utensils, towels, lip balm because these can carry the herpes virus during an outbreak.
* Wash your hands carefully and regularly prior to touching others during an outbreak.
* Use caution when touching other body parts.
* Avoid activities known to trigger outbreaks. Try to avoid stressful situations, like cold or flu, lack of sleep or prolonged sun exposure without sunblock.
* Use sunblock on lips and face prior to prolonged sun exposure.
In most cases, cold sores clear up without the need for treatment. However, if a person experiences complications associated with the virus, then it is a good idea to seek treatment.
Here are complications that may indicate the need to consider treatment for oral herpes:
· The blisters don’t go away within one to two weeks
· You have a pre-existing health condition that has put your immune system at risk
· Symptoms are severe
· You have frequent outbreaks
· Eye irritation occurs
There are many natural treatments available for the management of oral herpes. Natural treatments have been shown to reduce the number of oral herpes outbreaks experienced as well and the duration and the severity of the outbreaks.
Cold Sore Treatments From the Internet- Can You Trust These Home Remedies for Herpes Fever Blisters
July 12th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
The internet has many sites that list cold sore treatments home remedies. Can this information be trusted? After all, we’ve read that wikipedia is a site where users add their own information and that many universities are having trouble with the veracity of it’s content.
When you look at a discussion forum or a message board on health problems such as cold sore blisters try to see if the recommendation has received any feedback- positive or negative. This can help you get a little bit of perspective on the usefulness of a natural remedy for herpes that someone is suggesting.
Keep in mind that people are self-diagnosing and they may not even have had a cold sore but it could be a canker sore or a pimple on their lip. In any case, here are a few recommendations I’ve found on the net so let’s review them:
1) Put nail polish on the cold sore. I’m not too sure if I like this idea. Nail polish is used for chiggers by some people. We are talking about a sensitive area, the lip. You also eat and lick your lips so need to be aware of what chemicals will be on your lips. I don’t think this is a great idea.
2) Avoid peanuts . Yes, for me the argine in peanut butter can cause an eruption and there are many studies that say that an imbalance of amino acids can cause cold sore outbreaks. Try to avoid argine rich foods such as peanuts and chocolate.
3) Put tabasco sauce on the lip. Hmm, I don’t recommend this. I never tried it but don’t think burning the cold sore is a way to help it heal.
4) Eat yogurt and take acidopholous tablets. Yes, this sounds good and this builds the immune system and gives you good bacteria.
5) Use toothpaste on the lip cold sore and also apply listerine. In my research someone wrote they react negatively to sodium laurel sulfate which is in toothpaste so I am not sure this will be an effective treatment or if it can cause a reaction. In terms of using listerine, it depends on how your skin reacts to alcohol. Some of the listerines can be very strong. This needs more research.
6) Apply drying formulas from acne medications. No, an acne pimple is not the same as a cold sore which is a virus. If you dry your lips out the scab can open very easily as it tries to heal.
Try to study and evaluate each proposed suggestion and be sure you find others who have positive responses before trying an internet cold sore solution.
Coping With a Cold Sore
July 11th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
As a social worker I see people who complain about various physical issues. The cold sore embarrassment is mentioned a lot by those who suffer from a cold sore on the lip. When I speak to students they often mention not showing up to classes, cancelling dates and avoiding friends till the eruption heals. When I see professionals, they speak about trying to postpone meetings and presentations, cancel luncheons and avoid people at work.
Though it is only a sore on one’s lip, a cold sore creates a lot of inner tension and embarrassment. Remember it is just your lip, and it is your personality that shines through. You can grow a lot by not giving in to the urge to cancel situations and hide out during the active phase of the cold sore eruption.
It helps to have perspective and be grateful you aren’t in a life threatening situation or have a terminal illness. The cold sore will pass and people will admire you if they see you dealing with it with grace and equanimity. How we deal with adverse conditions is something people notice about us and to have an inner calm versus a sense of shame and hiding will show something deep about your character.
Yes, people judge others by their appearance, but we also sense a depth in someone when they are able to overcome challenges and not be obsessed about their appearance or others’ opinions of them. Try to remember this while you deal with your cold sore healing.
Of course, having a good plan and system to shorten and eliminate the cold sore is important as well since it is a virus that can recur. Do both: Work on your inner self but also take steps to improve your immune system and shorten the cold sore pimple cycle.
Tell Me – What are Cold Sores ?
July 8th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
What are cold sores? A common question as the cold sore epidemic grows. There is a lot of confusion and mis-information about cold sores around the internet. Let us take a look at the facts.
Cold sores, also called fever blisters and oral herpes, are painful, unsightly blisters that normally occur on the edge of the lips. They can also appear in other locations, such as nostrils, neck, cheek – and even on the fingertips.
Cold sores may also appear on the roof of the mouth or on the gums. This is very rare. But, because of this, cold sores are often confused with canker sores.
Here are some differences between the two that may help you determine what are canker sores and what are cold sores.
1. Canker sores always occur inside the mouth, usually on the softer tissue.
2. Cold sores are caused by a virus – canker sores are not.
3. Cold sores are contagious – canker sores are not.
Cold sores are very common. Nearly nine out of ten people worldwide carry the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores. Only about 66% of these know what cold sores are because they get them regularly. Two strains of this virus – herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 – are responsible for cold sores and ******* herpes sores.
Type 1 is most prevalent in ****** sores. Type 2 is most apparent in below-the-waist sores. As far as we can tell, sores created by either type are identical in every respect. They appear the same, feel the same and last just as long.
Here are the main cold sore symptoms that define the five different stages of cold sores. Average duration from first itching to final healing can range from 18 to 28 days – depending on your health and the treatments you use.
1. Itching and tingling in the target area just prior to the outbreak.
2. Swelling of the area along with formation of small and painful fluid-filled pimple-like blisters.
3. Large, open sore develops when these little blisters break and merge.
4. Headaches, fever and swollen lymph glands under the jaw are painfully apparent.
5. Yellowish scab forms over the sore and heals without a scar.
When first infected, these symptoms may not appear for 15 to 20 days – or not at all. Often, initial symptoms are so mild that you may not know you have been infected. These may include fever and sore throat. The herpes virus, for the most part, will lie dormant in your nerve ganglia (the nerve roots) below the skin.
Now, when conditions are right, it will travel to the surface to replicate. The virus, being exceedingly small, will enter a nerve cell. It then takes control and forces the cell to create copies of itself. Once the cell is full, the controlling virus destroys the cell to release the new virus. Millions of such exploded cells in close proximity cause the swelling and open sore.
Cold sores are contagious during the entire cold sore event. You are extremely contagious once the sore has broken open – until it is totally healed. The fluid that weeps from the sore is teeming with active herpes virus. Kiss or touch is the normal means of spreading this virus.
If you have a cold sore, be particularly cautious around infants or others. Also, be conscious that if the virus gets in the eye, it can cause cornea blisters. The permanent result is damaged vision.
Cold sore remedies may include over-the-counter creams and ointments. These will provide comfort, but do not expect them to speed healing. Fever, headache and swollen glands can be treated with your usual medicine for fever and headaches.
Using ice, particularly before the scab forms, will give pain relief, reduce the heat, and help drive the herpes virus back into hibernation. Keep the wound clean with alcohol on a cotton ball or swab.
Prevention includes care in not spreading to others or other parts of your own body. Avoid kissing when active cold sores are present. Keep hands clean. Cold sores itch and hurt a lot. Only touch sores with a cotton ball or tissue. Avoid sharing items with others, such as towels, when you or they have an active cold sore.
As we have seen, cold sores are ****** sores caused by the herpes simplex virus. We have also seen that they are extremely contagious to others as well as to your self. Finally, in reviewing what are cold sores, we talked about basic cold sore care.
The good news is there are newly discovered and simply amazing natural cold sore remedies coming out all the time now. Some of these can cut the healing time in half, or more. And can actually prevent them in the future. Not every cold sore remedy works for everyone. You will need to do some trial-and-error to find what works for you.
What are cold sores? For most folks, they are a source of much pain, embarrassment and irritation. But, with a little research and testing, there is simply no reason for you to suffer from cold sores again.
Cold Sore Remedies
July 7th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
I want to take the time to talk to you about the cold sores remedies. There are a lot of people that suffer from outbreaks of this problem all the time. Many people that have this problem are very embarrassed by it and don’t even have the first clue on why it occurs. I’ve even heard people say that they think they get these sores because of some sort of irritation or infection. The reason you have this problem is that you have a virus in your body that creates it. 80% of people have the virus that leads to cold sore and there is no cure for it. There are specific things you can do to help stop this. This is why I’m going to talk to you about cold sores remedies.
The first thing that you need to know is that prevention is the most important thing you can do. The virus will live dormant in your body and not create problems as long as your immune system is strong. Your goal should be to keep your immune system as high as possible. Basically you achieve that through a healthy lifestyle. That means you should be eating a balanced eating plan and you should be exercising on a regular basis.
The cold sores remedies are very simple. The first thing you need to do is make sure you keep your cold sore clean. The reason that these sores are such a problem is that they spread very easily. Keeping it clean is important for preventing the spread. Drinking tea is another great thing you can do. Tea contains anti-viral substances that will prevent the virus from spreading and will allow your immune system to more easily fight it.
Latest News About Foods To Avoid With Cold Sores
July 7th, 2009 — Diseases And Conditions
Foods to avoid with cold sores are those that are particularly high in arginine and have low levels of lysine. In this article you will learn about the key foods that have the biggest effect on your cold sores.
Lysine and arginine are two common amino acids found in foods. They are the two most widely researched nutrients that affect cold sores.
Here is how they work.
The herpes simplex virus is the root cause of all cold sores. A virus particle will enter a nerve cell at the surface and force it to create new virus. It will then explode the cell to release the cloned virus thus creating a huge open wound.
One of the main ingredients the cell must have to create new herpes virus is arginine. Your cells have special receptors that they use to store arginine.
The same receptors are used to store lysine. Lysine is a protein that cannot be used to create new virus.
If you have a diet rich in lysine, your cells will discard some arginine to store more lysine. The herpes virus, looking to clone itself, will avoid the cells that cannot support the cloning process.
Whenever your cells have a higher lysine than arginine content, it discourages creation of new virus. This often sends the herpes virus back into a latent state. You will not get a cold sore if the cells cannot create virus.
These are a few of the foods to avoid with cold sores. Arginine levels are higher than lysine levels in these selections.
—- Chocolate (ouch)
—- Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, peanuts
—- Flax, sesame and most other seeds
—- Any seafood that has a shell such as shrimp and oysters
—- Grains such as wheat and oats
—- Oranges, grapes and other fruits and berries
—- Most vegetables are neutral but avoid rutabagas, winter squash and pumpkins, broccoli, carrots and corn
Fact is – it can be hard to avoid certain foods. Some should not be avoided. You will notice many of the foods on the avoid list have a high nutritional value and are important for your optimal health. You probably would not hurt yourself by avoiding these foods for just a week or so.
However, for optimal health, you should not avoid these foods for any length of time. Do not use avoidance of these foods as a method to prevent cold sores. To do so could weaken your immune system. This could actually cause more cold sores, rather than less.
An excellent alternative solution to avoiding foods you love is to increase your lysine during your cold sore event. Increasing intake of lysine will also help prevent future cold sores.
The following foods are higher in lysine and can be used to balance out the high arginine foods to avoid with cold sores – especially during the outbreak.
All dairy products are rich in lysine, such as cheeses, yogurt, and whole milk. Other lysine rich foods include chicken, beef, beets, apricots, figs, avocado, apples and soybeans. Fish is a particularly good source of lysine, especially flounder.
Yes, I realize following a restricted diet is difficult for most people. Also, dairy products may be rich in lysine but cannot be tolerated by some folks. Fact is, I have not followed these avoidance guidelines very good myself.
For a large number of people, an easy and powerful alternative to this restricted diet is to take lysine as a supplement. Lysine is available anywhere you find vitamins. It is normally found in 500 mg. capsules. Taking four to eight capsules daily during a cold sore and one to two capsules daily between cold sores is common.
Is lysine safe to take in large quantity?
Lysine is perfectly safe. Eight capsules daily is only 4000 mg., or 4 grams. No bad side effects have ever been noted. You often exceed this just by eating food alone. A four-ounce serving of flounder, for example, will provide the equivalent of 4 to 5 grams of lysine. The capsules are just more convenient.
Do not give up the foods you love – especially chocolate. Eat additional high lysine food or take lysine capsules. This will cancel out the bad effects of the foods to avoid with cold sores.
